Verzuz battles are something that true Hip Hop, Reggae and R&B fans have looked forward to since the pandemic took place. It was a way that we could all truly connect as a unit to listen to some much needed therapeutic tunes that come from a time when music had a different sound and impression. Some notable acts that have battled so far were The Isley Brothers vs. Earth, Wind and Fire, Beenie Man vs. Bounty Killer, Erykah Badu vs. Jill Scott, Snoop Dogg vs. the late DMX.
To kick off Mother’s Day weekend we can look forward to an epic “battle” between two notable 90’s R&B groups SWV and Xscape this Saturday, May 8th at 8 PM EST.
They’ll be performing the tracks that packed the dance floor, helped us through heartbreak, and got us in the mood for love. You can watch it all unfold on the Verzuz official Instagram, on the Triller app and on the FiteTV app if you have Roku, Amazon Fire Stick etc. or a Smart TV.
Debuting in 1992, SWV (Sisters With Voices) featuring Cheryl “Coko” Gamble, Leanne “Lelee” Lyons, Tamara “Taj” Johnson, came on the scene with a New Jack Swing inspired sound that shot them to the top of the charts with hits like “Weak” and “Right Here.”
Kandi Burruss, Tameka “Tiny” Cottle, and sisters LaTocha Scott and Tamika Scott-Byas was discovered by mega-producer Jermaine Dupri in the ATL and Xscape was developed with hits like “Just Kickin’ It” and “Understanding.”
We can look forward to a riff-off between SWV‘s Cheryl “Coko” Gamble and Xscape‘s LaTocha Scott who are hands down some of the best vocalists to be discovered in the 90’s, surprise guests, stories behind their hit singles, a possible accapella moment and new music!
